In the mid-18th century, a new power rose in the oasis of Bukhara. The Manghit dynasty, a line of Uzbek emirs, would rule for over 150 years—surviving the waning of the Khanate, the rise of the Russian Empire, and the turmoil of the Great Game. This episode focuses on the dynasty's founder, Muhammad Rahim Biy, who seized control from the last Ashtarkhanid khan, and his successors who navigated Bukhara through a precarious era of Russian encroachment. We explore how the Manghits centralized power, fostered trade, and built a court that blended Persianate culture with Turkic traditions. But their story is also one of decline: the ignominy of becoming a Russian protectorate in 1868, the loss of Samarkand, and the final, tragic stand of Emir Alim Khan against the Bolsheviks in 1920. The Manghit legacy is etched into Bukhara's surviving architecture—the Chor Minor, the Sitorai Mokhi Khosa palace—and into the memory of a dynasty that tried to preserve independence even as the world around it changed.
