August 24, 2021, Feast of St. Bartholomew, Holy Rosary (Sorrowful Mysteries)

Friends of the Rosary:

We honor today St. Bartholomew, one of the Twelve Apostles mentioned in the Gospels and in the Acts. In St. John’s Gospel is known as Nathaniel.

Jesus said of him, “Here is a true child of Israel. There is no duplicity in him” (John 1:47).

St. Bartholomew was a good Jew, honest and innocent, a man well-read in the Scriptures, who recognized Jesus as the Son of God.

After the Ascension of Jesus, St. Bartholomew evangelized Asia Minor, northwestern India, and Armenia.

He died as a martyr in Armenia. He was dramatically burnt to death, and while still alive, his skin was torn from his body. He is often portrayed as a skinless man holding his own skin.

Today is also the feast of Our Lady, Health of the Sick. Our Lady Health of the Sick shrine is in the diocese of Michoacan, in Mexico. Her statue became a favorite Madonna in western Mexico and northward into the United States. In New Mexico, she is Our Lady of Santa Fe.
