What's the worst thing that could happen? If your mind jumps straight to the worst case, you may be catastrophizing, and that's one of the most common cognitive distortions there is.
In this second episode of our series on cognitive distortions and irrational beliefs, I'm looking at catastrophizing: predicting the worst, treating a small problem like a disaster, and letting that prediction shape your body, your relationships, and your decisions. We'll look at where it comes from, why fear of public speaking can outrank fear of death, and what to do when you catch yourself doing it.
We'll cover:
- Why fear of public speaking often ranks above fear of death
- The catastrophe equation: perceived threat, perceived likelihood, and your ability to cope
- Four types of catastrophizing: predictive, interpretive, health-related, and interpersonal
- The health story of a man who believed he would die at 50 like his father and grandfather
- Cognitive reappraisal: logic your way out of a worst-case story
- What the Bible says about faith, trust, and living in the present
This is the second of roughly 12 to 14 cognitive distortions we'll cover, one per episode. Episode 1 covered all or nothing thinking.
