Paul Wertico - "Last Train Home" - Pat Metheny Group
Om avsnittet
Paul Wertico joins Stevie & Jonnie on this episode of Who’s On Drums to discuss the Pat Metheny Group’s “Last Train Home” from the 1987 album Still Life (Talking).
Paul breaks down that unmistakable train groove: single strokes, hi-hat on two and four, and a light four on the floor. He explains how moving around the snare brings the steam locomotive to life, and the challenge of driving sequenced parts without a click while Pat plays behind the beat.
He recalls recording at the Power Station, where Pat wanted complete drum takes. A broken stick near the end of “Minuano” meant starting the whole track again. No punching in!
Along the way, Paul shares stories of subbing for Barrett Deems at 16, flying aerobatic aircraft and riding in locomotive cabs, while explaining why listening, reacting and finding your own sound matter more than stock beats and licks.
Paul also talks about his signature model flat ride, made by Dream Cymbals. Check it out here.
