The Mother Load

Did you ever wonder where the phrase "mother load" came from? It's actually from a mining term, "mother lode," which simply refers to a principal vein, a main source, or zone of veins of gold or silver ore. Miners drill to find this main wellspring of treasure from which all other veins flow.
