Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley — Chapter 18
Back in Geneva, Victor delays the terrible promise he has made, even as the thought of breaking it fills him with fear. When his father raises the possibility of an immediate marriage to Elizabeth, Victor realizes he cannot allow himself that happiness until his secret obligation is fulfilled.
Using scientific study as his explanation, Victor arranges a journey to England and sets out with Henry Clerval. Their route carries them down the Rhine through ruined castles, vineyards, and riverside towns, where Henry delights in everything Victor can barely bring himself to notice; by late December, they finally reach London.
