Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley — Chapter 19

Victor and Henry Clerval travel through England and Scotland, but their journeys affect them very differently. While Henry delights in new landscapes, history, and companionship, Victor is haunted by the promise he has made to the creature and secretly gathers what he needs to fulfill it.

Eventually Victor leaves Henry behind and seeks isolation on a remote Orkney island. There, surrounded by a bleak sea and almost complete solitude, he begins the dreadful work of creating the creature’s promised companion, finding the task far more horrifying than his first experiment.
