Rom-Com Wednesday: Always Be My Maybe, AAPI Spotlight & Every Summer After

19 min13 maj 2026

In today’s Rom-Com Wednesday, we’re celebrating AAPI Heritage Month with Always Be My Maybe (2019), the Netflix rom-com starring Ali Wong and Randall Park. This story follows childhood best friends Sasha and Marcus as they reconnect years after a painful falling out, only to realize their chemistry never fully disappeared.

What begins as a funny, nostalgic friends-to-lovers story slowly becomes something deeper about grief, emotional baggage, loneliness, and the fear of moving forward after loss. Between the San Francisco setting, food culture, music, and playful banter, this movie feels both comforting and emotionally grounded.

We also briefly chat about Hallmark’s All’s Fair in Mahjong, the conversations surrounding the film, and my honest thoughts after finally watching it.

And before we wrap up, I’m sharing a quick review of Every Summer After by Carley Fortune ahead of the upcoming Amazon Prime adaptation releasing June 10th.

Final Thoughts

Always Be My Maybe feels like more than a typical rom-com. Underneath the humor and nostalgia, it’s really a story about grief, emotional growth, loneliness, and reconnecting with the people who once knew you best.

Between the soundtrack, the food, the San Francisco setting, and the emotional depth underneath all the comedy, this ended up feeling like one of those comfort movies that stays with you.

And while All’s Fair in Mahjong sparked more complicated conversations, I still appreciated the cozy community atmosphere and heartfelt moments within the film.
