Episode 380: 10 Years of Discovering Jazz, Part 2

Celebrating this podcast's 10th Anniversary, I play the old intro I used, and look at some of my favourite episodes from 2017 to today.--with 'today' being some random picks of the thousands of new jazz albums released in 2026. And do a bit of bragging (sorry about that) explaining how an award winning Trent Radio program got turned into a podcast. And throw in a couple quotes from some reviews.

1. Everything You Could Be--Christopher Parnis. The title track from a 2024 album by an up and coming bassist and composer who I first interviewed when he was a young student in Peterborough. You can hear a short segment from that interview.

2. Giant Steps--John Coltrane, from Year 2 of the Podcast, episodes 52 to 54 on The Jazz Solo.

3. Elephantasy--Tom Varner. From one of my favourite episodes, on Jazz French Horn, Episode 77.

4. If You Never Come To Me--Frank Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim. From one of my "Real Book Obscurities" episodes from 2020.

5. Enough's Enough--Angela Verbrugge. From Victoria. A fine singer and composer who was so encouraging of this podcast during its Victoria years. She assisted with three episodes on a series of episodes on jazz vocalists. This one is from my "Adieu to Victoria" episode.

6. Big Yellow Taxi--Tommy Banks Orchestra (from he Montreaux Jazz Festival, 1978). This was one of the tunes played in preparation for my move back to my original hometown of Edmonton, Alberta. Featured a number of Edmonton jazz musicians.

7. Confirmation---Charlie Parker This was one of the tunes that is so often called out at jam sessions. I had a few episode on tha topic.

8. All the Things You Are--Wes Montgomery with the Wynton Kelly Trio. Probably the most called out tune at Edmonton's Yardbird Suite jazz jams.

9. Out of The Blue--Jan Harbeck Quartet. Illustrating the music of today....a random sample of 2026 jazz releases.

10. White Pain Peeling---a brief excerpt of AI jazz on a label called Volna Blu. Hopefully this is NOT the future of jazz.

11. Dystopian Bulgar--Collin Sherman. From an album calledOuroborosuite. It refers to an ancient symbol of a snake eating its own tail. A random pick from the over 3000 new jazz releases that I've found.
