Can you attend church without truly belonging to the body of Christ?
In this Extra Shot of Grace in the Grind, Cody Hudson digs deeper into 1 Corinthians 12 and Paul’s description of Christians as members of one body.
The Greek word melos means a member or functioning part of a body. Paul is not describing church membership like a subscription, club, or service we consume. He is describing believers who have been joined to Christ and, because of Him, joined to one another.
That changes the way we think about church attendance.
A Christian can sit in a service every week and still remain largely disconnected. Biblical belonging means more than being present in the same room. It means being known, receiving care, carrying burdens, using spiritual gifts, accepting correction, praying for others, and allowing other believers to strengthen us.
This episode explores:
• The biblical difference between attendance and belonging • What melos means in 1 Corinthians 12 • Why spectator Christianity contradicts the body metaphor • Why every Christian has both needs and responsibilities • How spiritual gifts strengthen the Church • Why maturity does not mean becoming independent of other believers • How to pursue Christian community after church hurt • Why wise boundaries and biblical belonging can coexist • How the Holy Spirit joins believers into one body
This is not a call to hold a church position, join every program, or force unhealthy relationships. Participation is bigger than a title.
You participate when you pray, encourage, serve, receive care, carry burdens, and allow yourself to be known.
The Church is not an event Christians simply attend.
If you belong to Christ, you are a member of His body.
And you cannot attend a body.
You belong to it.
