Should Pastors Do Everything?

Should pastors be expected to preach, counsel, visit, organize, solve problems, meet every need, and personally carry the ministry of an entire church?

In this Extra Shot of Grace in the Grind, Cody Hudson examines Acts 6 and Ephesians 4 to ask what Scripture actually says about pastors, church members, shared ministry, and delegation.

Acts 6 begins with a real problem. The Church is growing, vulnerable widows are being overlooked, and something must change.

But the apostles do not personally take over every ministry responsibility.

Instead, qualified men are entrusted with important practical care while the apostles remain devoted to prayer and the ministry of the Word.

Both responsibilities matter.

Luke even uses the same Greek word-family—diakonia, meaning service or ministry—to describe both practical care and the ministry of the Word.

This episode explores:

• Why a legitimate need does not automatically become the pastor’s personal task • What diakonia teaches about Christian ministry • Why practical service is deeply spiritual work • Why Acts 6 does not explicitly call the Seven deacons • How delegation can strengthen rather than weaken pastoral care • What Ephesians 4 teaches about equipping the saints • Why church members cannot outsource ministry to professionals • How a functioning body helps a growing church care for people

Ephesians 4 gives us a clear pattern:

Leaders equip.

Saints minister.

The body grows.

Pastors and elders are necessary. Biblical oversight matters. But Scripture never pictures one pastor carrying every relationship and every ministry task himself.

The answer to overloaded leaders is not less care.

It is more of the body doing the ministry Christ has given His people to do.

Delegation is not shepherds caring less.

Sometimes delegation is exactly what allows shepherds to shepherd better.
