Boggarts, as we understand them, are essentially the manifestation of our deepest darkest fears. Amortal shape-shifting non-beings that transform themselves in to whatever it is that we fear most. 

No one knows what their true form looks like (except maybe Mad-Eye Moody), no one knows where they come from, and no one knows..WHY they exist.
