Writer and comedian Sovereign Syre teams up with comedian and feminist murder balladeer Becky Poole, to chronicle the lives of women and gender nonconformists that got a bad rap. Whether they were pioneers in male dominated fields, criminal masterminds, or just epic sl*ts, we here at ILL REPUTE! support women’s rights, but more importantly we support women’s wrongs.

This weeks Itty Bitty Repute Committee: Joe Biden: Great President, terrible Father or is it the other way around? The left's addiction to moralizing all interpersonal conflict, and we lament the passing of Hard Rock Nick
Jemima was born on November 29, 1752, in Cumberland, Rhode Island, She was the eighth of twelve children in a big, devout Quaker family. Her dad, Jeremiah Wilkinson, was super active in their local meeting house. Her mom, Amy's presence in Jemima’s life was cut tragically short—she died in 1764 when Jemima was about 12 or 13.
According to accounts, Jemima was always a pretty girl, but after her mother passed away, she became lazy and combative. She would find anyway she could to get out of working, she would feign illnesses, argue and so on. She was just generally considered pretty but kind of mean and very entitled.
Then at some point in 1776, she starts acting sick, she stays in her room and won’t talk to anyone. Her family calls the doctor, who says she’s not physically ill, but clearly has mental issues. This goes on for months, until she confines herself to her bed. While later accounts say she had typhus, contemporary accounts say there was never a physical illness. But one day she emerged from her bedroom, talking in a deeper voice, and proclaiming:
That Jemima Wilkinson was dead. Their soul had left their body, and in its place was a new entity: the Publick Universal Friend, a genderless spirit sent by God to deliver a divine message to humanity.

Today we are talking about the one and only, Florence "Flo-Jo" Joyner, the woman who redefined speed, style, and success on the track. We’re diving into the life of one of the most iconic athletes of the 20th century. Not just because of her breathtaking world records—still unbeaten decades later—but because of the way she lived. Flo-Jo wasn't just a champion on the track; she was a force of nature in fashion, an icon for Black women, and a cultural trailblazer who challenged the expectations placed on women in sports.

Today we are talking about Circassian Beauties. For a period of time, Circassian women were considered the epitome of beauty. With their fair skin, blue or green eyes, and delicate features, they became an idealized standard of feminine beauty in both the Ottoman Empire and 19th-century Western Europe. But this admiration was deeply entwined with systems of power, slavery, and the commodification of beauty.

In Part One, we dove into the tragic story of Ruthie Mae McCoy, whose death exposed the harsh realities of life in Chicago's ABLA housing projects and inspired the urban legend of Candyman. We talked about the myth, its real-life origins, and how systemic neglect allowed horrors to happen within these communities. We covered how Ruthie Mae's call to 911 about someone breaking in through her bathroom mirror eerily mirrored the Candyman story. And it wasn't just about ghosts—it was about real, tangible fear and danger that residents had to live with every day.
In Part Two, we explore how the systemic issues within the ABLA projects—rampant drug trade, violence, and neglect—created an environment where Ruthie Mae’s tragic story wasn’t just a one-off incident. We’re also going to look at how Ruthie Mae herself fought to survive in this environment, trying to find a way out while battling her own mental health challenges. It’s not just about one person’s fear; it’s about an entire community struggling against conditions that seem insurmountable. We’re going to read more about what life was like in ABLA, and how, despite her best efforts, Ruthie Mae was let down by every system that was supposed to protect her. This part of the story shows just how deeply rooted the problems were—and how the system failed to address them.

Ela and Sovereign read through Project 2025, so you don't have too.
Following the 2016 presidential election, which saw Donald Trump unexpectedly carry Michigan, Whitmer felt a renewed urgency to run for office again. Many of her supporters urged her to step up, recognizing that the state needed a leader who could unite people during divisive times and address the pressing economic and social issues Michigan faced. Michigan had been hit hard by economic challenges, and Whitmer believed she had the experience and vision to bring the state back from the brink.

Growing up in a bipartisan household, with a father who worked for Republican Governor Milliken and a mother who was involved with Democratic administrations, Whitmer was exposed to different political perspectives. This upbringing taught her the importance of working across the aisle and contributed to her pragmatic, results-driven approach to governance. Her parents’ careers in law and public service also gave Whitmer a firsthand understanding of the power of government to affect people’s lives, a lesson that has been a guiding principle in her political career.

"Trad wife" is short for "traditional wife." It refers to women who embrace ultra-traditional gender roles, often associated with 1950s-style domesticity. These women typically prioritize homemaking, child-rearing, and supporting their husbands over pursuing careers or personal ambitions outside the home.
We've got three women to discuss today:

This episode was recorded before the historic debate between Harris and Trump.
In 2016, Harris set her sights on the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Barbara Boxer.
This was California's first open Senate seat in 24 years. Harris ran a strong campaign, emphasizing her record as Attorney General and her progressive stance on issues like criminal justice reform, immigration, and climate change. She won the election decisively.
Harris quickly made a name for herself in the Senate, particularly through her incisive questioning during committee hearings. One of her most notable moments came during the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Hi guys. sovereign accidentally forgot to upload this episode.
This week, Sovereign syre and Ela Darling finish their two part episode about Juana Maria, the last Nicoleno. Today we focus on what happened to her story long after her death when it was reimagined as the popular children's novel Island of the Blue Dolphins.
Since its publication, Island of the Blue Dolphins, a fictionalized telling of the story of a Nicoleno woman abandoned on San Nicolas Island for twenty years, often credited as the last of her tribe, the book has been a staple in American curriculum. The very sanitized story told in the book, featuring a twelve year old girl who learns to survive on her own by finding harmony with the land and animals that surround her, manages to tell the story of the Lone Woman, without telling us anything about her at all. In effect the book serves as colonialist propaganda. And today, we’re going to correct the record.

This week on the podcast Sovereign Syre and Ela Darling discuss Juana Maria, better known to history as the Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island. Juana Maria was a Native Californian woman who was the last surviving member of her tribe, the Nicoleño. She lived alone on San Nicolas Island off the coast of Alta California from 1835 until her removal from the island in 1853. Scott O'Dell's award-winning children's novel Island of the Blue Dolphins was inspired by her story. She was the last native speaker of the Nicoleño language.

In 2005 Lisa Frank filed for divorce. She filed a second lawsuit to oust James Green from the company. What followed was a protracted legal battle that made the psychodrama that had been taking place at LFI for over a decade, a matter of public record.
The following is from the article The Rainbow Gulag, published on Jezebel.com in 2013 by Tracy Egan Morrissey.:
“[James] really turned that place into a shit hole,” said Justin, who added, “The guy’s kind of dick.”

Today we’re discussing Lisa Frank, the artist behind the eponymous brand Lisa Frank Inc. If you were alive in the 80s and 90s, the psychedelic, neon airbrushed designs of unicorns and teddy bears and dolphins had a chokehold on your childhood. From stickers to binders to pencil cases, Lisa Frank merchandise was what divided the cool from the broke. Lisa Frank was one of the first fine artists to gear her designs toward children rather than wealthy art collectors. And her gamble paid off big, at the peak of her popularity, Lisa Frank Inc was taking in more than $150 million dollars a year.

This week is part two of our two parter on Cass Elliot. Sovereign Syre and Ela Darling talk about Cass's life after the break up of The Mamas And The Papas and her vindication as a solo singer.
Once money started coming in, Cass hosted artist salons at her large Laurel Canyon estate. She was kind and charismatic, easily making her the most popular one of the group. Joni Mitchell wrote several songs in her living room. At a soiree at her home one night, she urged her friends David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash to sing together at her place, thus forming Crosby Stills and Nash. She was also the only other person to sing on the first Crosby Stills and Nash album.
David Crosby described her life, “She had possibly the nicest house of any of us, and she liked having people over… I remember an afternoon when I took Eric Clapton up there and he and Cass and Joni Mitchel played tunes.”

In part one of a two parter, Sovereign Syre and Ela Darling delve into the origins of a 2000s icon.
Anna Nicole Smith was a polarizing, misunderstood figure. Often remembered for being an absolute trainwreck. Her rise to fame, from the girl next door to supermodel, made her a media darling, her campy, over the top persona, and ditzy girl humor on one of the earliest reality shows made her a queer icon, and her slide into addiction and despair made her a tragic figure of mythic proportions. I mean, she’s become a trope in rap songs alongside the likes of Donald Trump and Monica Lewinsky. Iconic.

From the silent era's vamps to the Golden Age goddesses of Hollywood, the bombshell has always been an enchanting figure, shaped and reshaped by societal desires and anxieties.
The bombshell is not a static ideal. It has morphed and adapted, mirroring the shifting landscapes of culture and feminism. Today, in the digital age, the bombshell exists in a new dimension, where social media amplifies both empowerment and objectification. We are left to question: Is the bombshell a symbol of female agency, or merely a construct designed to titillate and control?
This exploration will delve into the complex history of the bombshell inits various incarnations, and examine the power it wields.

His transition required thirteen operations and took place over four years, with no one the wiser. Dillon went on to be a surgeon himself, and traveled the world with various naval vessels for six years, living life as a man, with no one suspecting his origins.
He was ultimately outed because of his nobility. There are peerage records that are made of everyone's descendancy and changing one’s names in those had been impossible and eventually someone noticed the discrepancy.
After living as Michael Dillon for fifteen years, he was onboard a ship when he got a cable from England. It was from The Daily Express as said “Do you intend to claim the title since your change-over?”

“Prozac Nation is a young person’s book, both in terms of its author and its target audience…What seemed most important to me about Wurtzel’s writing was that she had been messy, and she was willing to detail that mess without apology…It was a radical departure from how I’d seen women write about themselves…Whether we like it or not, Prozac Nation really did change the landscape when it comes to the way women write about themselves. It laid the groundwork for the what Jia Tolentino called the “personal-essay boom” of the early 2010s, an era when no detail was too graphic, no humiliation too private for sharing.”
It’s important to understand what was going on in the culture at this time. Prozac had just become popular, and record numbers of people were being diagnosed with depression. The chart topping artists were Depeche Mode, Nirvana, and Nine Inch Nails, bands whose messages were those of apathy and wallowing in despair, and a few months before Prozac Nation was published, Kurt Cobain committed suicide. There was a problem, but people were also wary of how we were treating it.

This week Sovereign Syre and Ela Darling profile writer and icon, Elizabeth Wurtzel. A beautiful, young, Harvard graduate whose memoir Prozac Nation got her on the New York Times Bestseller List and made her an overnight celebrity. She also suffered from major depression and was one of the first people to be prescribed the drug Prozac. She was both a media darling, and roundly mocked by others, for what was precieved as a kind of narcissism endemic of a news generation, a cohort labeled Gen X.

Roselyn “Rosie” Keo was the daughter of Cambodian refugees. When she was younger, her parents got caught up in gambling and nightlife, taking off for Atlantic City, leaving Rosie and her siblings to be raised by their elderly grandparents. She was a wild child, getting in fights, having bad boyfriends, typical teenage rebel stuff. She was growing up Rockland County, and by the age of 17, she dropped out of school and got a job working at New York City Diner to help with expenses at home. There was a gentleman’s club nearby called, Lace, and the dancers would often come into the diner after their shifts. One night a manager at Lace tipped her $20 bucks on a $20 dollar ticket and told her she should hit up the club if she was interested in making “real money.” Soon after she went to the club, lied about her age, and started working the pole. What followed became the basis for the hit film Hustlers starring Jennifer Lopez, Lizzo and Cardi B.

It's the end of Season Two! We did it! This week we conclude our series on Ada Lovelace.
In September 1843, Ada Lovelace published her paper on the Analytical Engine in Scientific Memoirs under the title "Sketch of the Analytical Engine, with Notes from the Translator.". Ada was 27 years old, an aristocratic, married mother of three children at the time. Her final published paper included seven important Notes labeled A-G that contained her observations, her assertions, and, it turns out, her legacy...she also cooked up a scheme to use her mathmatical skills to run a gambling operation to fund the building of said engine. Depsite her mother's efforts, Ada Lovelace would turn out to be just as corruptable as her notorious father, Lord Byron.

“Plot: A young wife is suddenly widowed. Left with four children. She is totally unskilled for the labor market, and deeply in debt. Her home and all she has are repossessed. However… she has one choice. She is the sole heir to a tremendous fortune. If she can deceive her dying father, and never let him know she is the mother of four children whom he would despise. “Four children are imprisoned in an upstairs room of a huge mansion. Their playground is the attic. The two older children are twelve and ten, named Christopher and Cathy. The younger two are twins, age three when they go to live upstairs.
“Without sunlight, Cory and Carrie cannot grow. Their lives become a virtual endurance test to outlive the dying grandfather, who stays always on the first floor, taken care of by a private duty nurse, and a staff of servants. “The years pass. The grandfather doesn’t die. The mother marries again and gradually drifts away from her children.” In her letter, Virginia emphasizes that the children’s grandmother considers them “the devil’s issue. Born out of unholy wedlock between half-niece and half-uncle. I call my novel, which is not truly fiction… FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC.”

The Woman Beyond The Attic: The V.C. Andrews Story by Andrew Neiderman
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flowers_in_the_Attic
When one of the smartest women in England, Anne Isabella Milbanke, fell in love with the most scandalous, and handsome, creative genius of his time, Lord Byron, the fallout was nothing less than a national scandal. Their young daughter, Ada, was caught in the crossfire. Ada spent her early childhood being used as a bargaining chip in her parents divorce, and a bitter reminder to Anne Milbanke, of Lord Byron's many betrayals. Desperate not to have her daughter turn out like her drunken, whore of an ex-husband, Milbanke insisted on Ada having the most exclusive STEM education money could buy. While Ada still showed the libertine tendencies of her father, she was almost predestined to become the Mother of Computer Science. This week, we look at the turbulent childhood and rigid education that brought Ada Lovelace right up to the doorstep of technological innovation.

On a very special episode of ILL REPUTE! we interview Ret. Constable Tom Wood of Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1983, Constable Wood was called to investigate the murder of Sheila Anderson, a local sex worker. During his investigation, he came to understand that the sex industry had changed, and so did the way they needed to police it. Tom tells us how he came to see the problem as one of public safety before criminal justice, and he met the challenge head on. While Sheila's death goes unsolved, it also saved countless lives.

Misery Literature is a genre of memoir that details the real-life struggles and adversities of individuals, focusing particularly on themes of abuse, poverty, addiction, and survival against the odds. They are usually harrowing stories of the author's survival through complex trauma, usually told from the first person perspective, which generally end in, if not a happy conclusion, at least a ray of hope as the abuse cycle is broken...but when Tragedy becomes profitable, charlatans reach for their quills.

The plague led to a drastic reduction in population, labor shortages, and social upheaval. Entire villages and towns were depopulated, and some regions saw a collapse of agricultural and economic systems. People in the 14th century had little understanding of the causes of the plague, and various responses were attempted, including quarantine measures, flagellant movements, and persecution of minority groups, such as Jews and lepers. None of these measures were effective in halting the spread of the disease. This disruption of the social and economic order created a climate of fear, uncertainty, and hardship. In times of crisis, people often sought explanations and scapegoats for their suffering, which could include the persecution of perceived outsiders and those accused of witchcraft.

The European Witch Craze, also known as the Witch Hunts or the Witch Trials, was a period of intense persecution of individuals accused of witchcraft in Europe from the late 15th century to the 18th century.Thousands of people, primarily women, were accused, arrested, tried, and often executed as witches during this time.
The witch hunts were rooted in the belief that certain individuals, known as witches, had made pacts with the devil or evil spirits. They were believed to possess supernatural powers, including the ability to harm others, fly, shape-shift, and cast spells. Witchcraft was seen as a grave threat to society and Christianity.

This week on ILL REPUTE! Sovereign Syre and Ela Darling welcome their very first guest! Dr. Kim Tallbear is a Native scholar who literally wrote the book on Native American DNA, and has become the defacto expert on self-indigenization, more commonly known as race shifting, ethnic fraud, or pretendianism. We talk with Dr. Tallbear about what indigenous ethnic fraud is, why it's perpetrated so easily and frequently, what the fraudsters get out of it, and what we can do to disrupt it.

In 2022, PBS released the documentary “Carry It On” about Buffy Sainte Marie’s life. A Native journalist sat down to watch it, and found herself uneasy as the documentary progressed. Something about Buffy’s adoption story didn’t add up; Buffy had never found her real parents. So she started digging and found what she considered damning evidence that Buffy Sainte-Marie had fabricated her identity for the last sixty years: a birth certificate.

Buffy Sainte-Marie burst onto the folk music scene in the early sixties, playing in the coffee houses of Manhattan and Toronto with the likes of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Leonard Cohen. She quickly caught the attention of music critics with her warbling delivery, and her unapologetically political songs about Native American issues. Playing the guitar, piano, and mouth bow, her talent was undeniable, and her image was just as intriguing to audiences. With her long black hair, dark skin and “ethnic features” along with a style that incorporated traditional Native American pieces with a rock ‘n’ roll aesthetic, she arrived just in time for the civil rights movement and its focus on Black and Native thinkers, artists, and causes.

This week on the podcast Sovereign Syre and Ela Darling examine three different iconic depictions of female suicide and talk about their impact on the culture, and what they can teach us about how we view female suffering.
They analyze the painting "Ophelia" by John Everett Millais and the later suicide of the woman who posed for it, Elizabeth Siddal, Art's first supermodel. Then they look at the mass produced death mask of The Unknown woman of the Seine, an unidentified teenage girl who threw herself into the Seine River in Paris. Her face went on to be used as the model for the CPR doll all paramedics are trained on to this day. They also discuss "The Most Beautiful Suicide", the photograph taken of Eveleyn McHale after she jumped to her death from the Empire State Building, that went on to be on the cover of TIME magazine, and is considered by many to be one of the most compelling photographs ever taken.
Finally, they look at a cross-cultural global study of female suicide to see what it teaches us about what female suffering really looks like, and why it’s a much bigger problem than people think. Suicide is the leading cause of death in women between the ages of 15 and 19 globally, and those numbers are on the rise. How can we disrupt this trend?

This week, Sovereign Syre and Ela Darling conclude their series on Phyllis Diller.
“As a child I had very strong passions and aspirations, and I’ve lived to realize them all. I’ve had a family, I’ve known great romance, clothes are coming out of my ears, God only knows the friends I have, and although I didn’t foresee all the travel, it has been just incredible. I was the kid who never had a room or a birthday party. All I had to play with were boxes, but I loved my boxes. The glass, you see, is always half-full, and I’m grateful for all I’ve experienced.” --Phyllis Diller

This week on the pod, Sovereign Syre tells Ela Darling about Phyllis Diller's whirlwind rise to fame, making her the first female stand up comedian to become a household name. While her star was on the rise however, her turbulent homelife was about to implode. Phyllis found herself in new territory, navigating the Hollywood system, being cast over and over again as the "ugly woman," an image she had herself cultivated, but which started to eat away at her self esteem.

This week on the podcast Sovereign Syre tells Ela Darling about Phyllis Diller. During her career she became the first female stand up to become a household name, but Phyllis Diller started at the very bottom, a mother of five children married to charismatic loser that was at turns dismissive and abusive. In the 1950s. In her late thirties. Welcome to the first part in our series on one of the most resilient and fascinating women in entertainment.

Greetings and welcome to SEASON TWO of ILL REPUTE!
In 1984, an ambitious photojournalist snuck into Afghanistan to document the refugee crisis there. When he came across a beautiful young Afghan girl with blazing green eyes, he knew he had to get a photo of her...and seventeen years later, would go on a highly publicized search to locate the girl, now a grown woman.
This week Sovereign Syre tells Ela Darling about how one of the most recognizable photographs ever to appear in National Geographic raises pressing questions about ethics in photojournalism, and the racist beginnings of the National Geographic brand.

In the third installment in our series on Calamity Jane, Sovereign Syre tells Ela Darling about the birth of Deadwood. Initially a settlement of a few storefronts and tents, in a period of a few months the town nestled in the Black Hills attracted close to ten thousand citizens. Far from a bustling metropolis, the town was full of outlaws with murders happening in the streets daily. Leaving town wasn't much easier; the recent victory at Little Big Horn had empowered the Native folks who were tired of the encroachments on their sacred hunting grounds, and death was just as likely on the road out of town. Not to mention the ubiquitous threat of road agents, ready to fleece any carriage found traveling alone.
While Jane was cavorting with oulaws and getting arrested for Drunk and Disorderly on the regular, back East she was featured in one of the most famous dime store novel series of all time: Deadwood Dick.
And just like that, she became an overnight celebrity.

(No. It's not.)
It’s 1983 and our heroine, an ophthalmologist, is treating a patient with a condition called blepharospasm, a painful neurological disorder that causes involuntary muscle spasms and contractions of the eyelid. After administering a neuromodulator to the affected muscles, a procedure she had performed with her patient many times before, her patient was unhappy. Angry, in fact: the doctor had neglected to treat the area between her eyebrows.
Apologizing, our doctor explained, “I’m sorry but I didn’t think you were spasming there.” The impatient patient retorted, “I know. I’m not spasming there, but every time you treat me there I get this beautiful untroubled expression.”
This is how Dr. Jean Carruthers pioneered the cosmetic use of Botulinum Toxin, and thus Botox was born... and the "Discourse" has been ambivalent about its ubiquity ever since.
Either Botox is anti-feminist because, as one writer for the Washington Post put it, “Every choice to conform to sexist social norms makes it harder for other women to choose otherwise. Every woman who has plastic surgery or Botox or gets her hair dyed or, yes, changes her name makes it harder for other women not to.”
Or… Botox is just like any other decision women make about their bodies and appearance: an ongoing practice in agency and self-determination that is most competently observed through the lens of Women Making Personal Choices rather than Women Being Personally Responsible for Upending Centuries of Oppression.

In her lifetime Calamity Jane was the most famous woman in the world, and her name still evokes the spirit of the WIld West. She has been a character in countless dime novels, television shows, and feature films, and yet all of them were largely fabricated bearing no resemblence to her actual life. In this series on Calamity Jane, we hope to rectify that. In the following episodes we will profile her REAL life, and find that truth is far wilder than fiction.
In part two of our series, we follow a newly orphaned Jane as she navigates the politics of being a part of the Rolling Scum and her transition into military scout. Including original research by Sovereign Syre, we delve into some theories about what Jane was doing during her "missing years."

In part one of our series, we chart Jane's early life. Born Martha Jane Canary in Missouri to a hopeless gambler and his teenage wife, a former dancehall girl, Jane was born to run. After the death of her grandfather, the family discovers that Jane's father had been embezzling from his own father to pay for his gambling habit, so with the threat of the law on the way, her father gathered up the family and put them on a wagon train headed for the gold and silver mines of Montana.
The world they arrive in is dangerous, crowded and filthy, justice is meted out by vigalante committees and outlaws hang by their necks from the gates of every boomtown. It is into this world that Jane will find herself orphaned.

In the final installment in our series on Hedy Lamarr, Sovereign Syre and Ela Darling discuss Hedy Lamarr's most famous invention, frequency hopping, and how the US government f*cked her in the deal to the tune of 30 billion dollars. How is it possible that the inventor that brought us WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth never saw a dime? Because she happened to be a dime herself, of course.

This week on the pod Sovereign Syre and Ela Darling discuss Borderline Personality Disorder. Why? Because 75% of those diagnosed with BPD are women, and it is the most stigmatized mental illness out there...and according to the literature, the most painful. People who suffer from BPD live twenty years less than their counterparts, and the rate of suicidality is markedly increased. This is an illness attacking women in large numbers, and it has a body count.
So let's intervene and disrupt the narrative that women with BPD just, never get better.

This week, Ela Darling continues to teach Sovereign Syre about Hedy Lamarr. It's the early thirties and the precocious teenager is a rising star in Austrian cinema. After convincing her parents to let her run off to Prague by herself, she is given the starring role in Ecstasy, an erotic masterpiece about a young, sexually repressed wife who finds release in the arms of a lover much younger than her husband. The film set the world ablaze with it's unfettered depiction of the female form and pleasure. The film established her as a star, a rebel, and...an outcast.

In 1809, Sarah Baartman, an indentured servant from South Africa, was smuggled into England. She was put on display as the "Hottentot Venus" in Picadilly Square. Dressed in an elaborate costume of next to nothing, she sang and danced, while European onlookers gawked. Abolitionists at the time, saw her treatment as nothing more than trafficking and slavery, which had recently been outlawed in Britain and it's colonies. Sarah Baartman became the first test case of the new laws, and her celebrity was launched into the stratosphere. In our second and final installment on Sarah Baartman we trace her rise to fame and the tragedy that struck after.

Before Nicki Minaj, before Kim Kardashian, before Marilyn Monroe, there was a South African woman whose voluptuous physique captured the European imagination. In 1809, Sarah Baartman an indentured servant to a free Black family in Capetown, caught the attention of a British surgeon. The industrious doctor envisioned a theatrical production to end them all, and make him, Sarah, and her employer rich. In part one of this two part series, we talk about where Sarah came from, and how she went from living in a thatched hut with her family in Camdeboo to performing in the African Theater of the bustling metropolis of Capetown, and two mens' audatious plan to smuggle her out of Africa and into Picadilly Square in London.

In 1849, Olive Oatman's father sold everything he owned and started out west with his wife and children. He was following a twenty-one year old Mormon prophet in search of Utopia, which he said was located in the middle of the desert somewhere in Arizona. As spiritual tensions broke up the wagon train, and the perils of the journey widdled away at their animals and supplies, the family found themselves on their own, stranded in a war zone.

This week my guest co-host is Heather Berg, a professor from USC that studies feminism, marxism, precarity, labor and porn. We talk about the witch trials and the birth of capitalism. We also talk a little Inside Baseball about academia. Heather says its not gossiping, it's being in community.
Empress Theodora began a prostitute in a brothel in the Eastern Roman Empire, but when she began performing on the stage, she quickly caught the eye of the Emperor, and he made her his co-regent. She ruled so well she was made into a saint after she died. Talk about a glow up!
Jeanne Baret was the first woman to circumnavigate the globe despite it being illegal for women to board French Navy vessels in 1766. When Bougainville was commissioned to sail around the world, he asked renowned botanist Philibert Commerson to join him. Commerson couldn't leave behind his lover and assistant, Jeanne, so they disguised her as a teenage boy...everything was going to plan until they arrived in Tahiti.
Lizzie Lape was an Ohio Madame who was a pioneer in every way. She married eight times, ran a chain of bordellos, was involved in political intrigue, was sued for child support and was the first Madame to be sued by the state.
In 1734 a massive fire gutted Montreal. The fire burned so fast and so fierce that in the end over half the town had been destroyed. The blame quickly came down on the head of a slave named Angelique and her lover, a white houseboy that worked in the same house. Although the trial was swift as was her execution, scholars still can't decide what really happened that fateful night.
Sovereign Syre and Siouxsie Q James discuss the legend of La Malinche, the native woman that helped Cortez conquer Mexico. Some see her as a traitor, others as a victim doing whatever was needed to survive. We talk about the burdens of war on women, and just who they should give fealty to...
