Not all wounds can be spoken away. Even among the dead, pride and grief keep their distance.
In The Odyssey, Book 11, Odysseus watches Achilles depart in quiet joy, comforted at last by news of his son. Around them, other spirits gather to question the living — all except Ajax, son of Telamon. Still enraged over the contest for Achilles’ armor, Ajax stands apart, refusing even now to answer Odysseus’ words of regret and reconciliation. Odysseus confesses his sorrow for Ajax’s death and the doom the gods laid upon the Achaeans, but Ajax turns away in silence and vanishes into Erebus.
This passage reveals the limits of understanding and apology, where some divisions endure beyond death itself.
