Even the mightiest hero leaves only a shadow behind. And at last, the dead grow too many to face.
In The Odyssey, Book 11, Odysseus beholds the phantom of Heracles — fearsome even in death — while learning that the hero himself dwells among the immortal gods, married to Hebe. Heracles speaks of his life of endless trials, including his descent into Hades to seize the hound of hell, before vanishing once more into the gloom. As Odysseus waits, the spirits of the dead gather in a rising clamor, until terror seizes him at the thought of Persephone loosing the Gorgon upon him. He flees at once, calling his men to the ship and rowing swiftly away as wind and water carry them from the land of the dead.
This passage closes the journey to the underworld — not with answers, but with urgency — as Odysseus escapes before knowledge turns to annihilation.
