The Forgotten Life of Musa al-Alami

This episode explores the complex life of Musa al-Alami, a Palestinian intellectual and civil servant who navigated the turbulent transition from Ottoman rule to the British Mandate. We examine his role in the Arab Higher Committee and his efforts to mediate between local Arab leadership and British authorities during the late 1930s. The conversation delves into the Wadi al-Joz negotiations, where al-Alami attempted to forge a compromise that could have altered the course of history but ultimately failed due to entrenched mutual distrust. We also discuss his relationship with figures like Abd al-Qadir al-Husayni and how al-Alami’s vision of a binational state was overshadowed by rising nationalism and colonial policy. Through archival letters and historical analysis, we uncover the personal costs of political compromise and the enduring legacy of those who sought peaceful resolution in an era of escalating conflict.
