The Ottoman Legacy and the Mandate's Hidden Maps

Long before the modern borders of Palestine were drawn in blood, the land was organized under centuries of Ottoman administration that created a complex web of religious endowments, local autonomy, and shifting communal identities. This episode explores how the Waqf system shaped urban life in cities like Jerusalem and Jaffa, and how the British Mandate’s arrival disrupted these delicate balances through contradictory promises and arbitrary zoning laws. We examine the specific role of figures like Musa al-Husayni and the tension between traditional Arab leadership and emerging Zionist institutions during the 1920s and 30s. By looking at the architectural memory of places like Hebron and the legal frameworks of the Nakba, we uncover how historical land tenure systems influenced the displacement narratives that persist today. The conversation moves beyond high-level politics to the ground level: who owned what, how communities interacted in mixed neighborhoods, and how colonial bureaucracy often hardened fluid social boundaries into rigid ethnic lines. Through the lens of the 1929 Hebron Massacre and the subsequent reorganization of urban spaces, we see how identity became tied to property and protection in ways that still resonate. This is not just a history of conflict, but a deep dive into the administrative and social fabric that made the region’s struggles so uniquely entrenched.
