The PLO's Kuwait Decade: From Exile to Beirut

After the trauma of Black September in Jordan, the Palestine Liberation Organization faced an existential crisis. Where would they rebuild? The answer lay not in the Levant, but in the Gulf. This episode traces the PLO’s unexpected golden age in Kuwait during the late 1960s and early 1970s. We explore how oil wealth transformed the fedayeen from scattered guerrillas into a disciplined national movement, and how this period fostered the distinct Palestinian identity that persists today. Key figures like Yasser Arafat and Khalil al-Wazir navigated complex diplomatic waters, while organizations like George Habash’s PFLP challenged the mainstream narrative with radical internationalism. The story culminates in the dramatic exodus from Kuwait following the 1973 oil crisis and the eventual move to Lebanon, setting the stage for the Battle of Karameh and the subsequent decades of conflict. Through interviews, archival records, and personal accounts, we uncover the hidden war fought in boardrooms and barracks alike, revealing how exile shaped the modern Palestinian struggle.
