Om avsnittet

In September 1962, a coup in Sana'a ended centuries of Zaidi imamate rule in North Yemen. This episode traces the fall of Imam Muhammad al-Badr, the rise of Abdullah al-Sallal, and the outbreak of the North Yemen Civil War. We follow the first 48 hours of the coup: the siege of the Dar al-Shukr palace, al-Badr's dramatic escape to Saada, and the immediate international reaction. Egypt's Gamal Abdel Nasser threw in support for the republicans, while Saudi Arabia backed the royalists with British help. The conflict drew in mercenaries, Cold War powers, and turned Yemen into a proxy battlefield. We also look at the role of the Free Yemeni Movement, the role of the Hashid and Bakil tribes, and how the war dragged on for eight years, leaving deep scars that still shape Yemen today.
