We explore the Tahirid dynasty, which ruled western Yemen from 1454 to 1517. Based in Zabid, the Tahirids rose from petty lords to control Aden and the Tihama, patronizing architecture and resisting the Zaydi imams. Their story climaxes with the Portuguese attack on Aden in 1513 led by Afonso de Albuquerque, and their downfall at the hands of the Mamluks under Sultan Qansuh al-Ghawri. We discuss their legacy as a forgotten golden age and how their fall paved the way for Ottoman rule. This episode fills a gap between the Rasulids and the Ottomans, featuring figures like Amir I, the Zaydi Imam al-Mutawakkil, and the Mamluk general al-Mutahhar. Also, we touch on the Tahirid architectural legacy in Zabid, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
