60. This Is Us and the fantasy of modern family life
Om avsnittet
What does This Is Us get right about motherhood and family life, and what does it make look far easier than it really is?
After finally finishing all six seasons, I couldn’t stop thinking about the Pearson family. The show captures the tiny moments that shape a childhood, the way family stories echo through generations, and the time, intention and support required to create the “magic” children remember.
But it also presents a version of motherhood that can feel almost impossibly patient. Rebecca carries the broken sleep, the interruptions and the loss of time for herself, yet rarely expresses the anger or resentment many mums would understandably feel. It raises a bigger question about the stories we’re shown: are mothers allowed to struggle, as long as we remain gentle and pleasant while doing it?
In this episode, I explore:
what This Is Us understands about motherhood, relationships and intergenerational family life
the invisible work behind an apparently idyllic childhood
why Rebecca and Jack’s family life required time, capacity and a growing village
the difference between portraying maternal frustration and allowing a mother to fully express it
what the series taught me about connection, separation and the ordinary moments we remember
This isn’t quite a review and contains no major spoilers. It’s a reflection on one of television’s most memorable families, the conditions that allowed them to thrive, and the gap between the family life we’re sold and the reality many parents are living.
