The Russian Revolution: The Green Armies of 1919
Om avsnittet
Between the Whites and the Reds, a third force rose in the Russian Civil War: the Green Armies. This episode follows the peasant partisans of the Ukrainian woodlands, the so-called 'Greens' who fought both Bolshevik and White armies from 1919 into 1920. We trace the rise of local self-defense bands into the Revolutionary Insurgent Army of Ukraine under Nestor Makhno — but also the lesser-known Green commanders like Yuriy Tyutyunnyk and the Otaman of the Zeleny Klyn, who carved out autonomous zones in the Dnieper region. We explore how peasant communes, deserters from both sides, and veterans of the Tsar's army formed mobile detachments, using the forests and rivers to ambush supply lines. The Bolshevik offensive in 1919, the White Army's scorched-earth tactics, and the eventual suppression of the Greens reveal a war within a war — one that shaped the uneasy peace that followed. Based on diaries, Cheka reports, and local histories, this episode offers a ground-level view of a chaotic, often forgotten front of the Civil War.
