Beirut 1875: The Secret Society That Dreamed of Independence
In the mid-1870s, while the Ottoman Empire struggled to hold its Arab provinces, a small secret society formed in Beirut with a radical dream: an independent Syrian nation. This episode follows the founding of the Beirut Secret Society (Jam'iyyat Beirut al-Sirriyya) by young intellectuals from the Syrian Protestant College, including Butrus al-Bustani, Nasif al-Yaziji, and Faris Nimr. We explore how the Nahda, or Arab Renaissance, created the intellectual climate for their ideas, and how the society's discovery by Ottoman authorities forced its members into exile. We also delve into the legacy of the society as a precursor to Arab nationalism, and how its story challenges the simple sectarian narratives often applied to Lebanon's history.
