In 1968, an Israeli raid on Beirut's international airport destroyed thirteen civilian planes and nearly brought Lebanon to its knees. The attack came after the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine hijacked an El Al flight and flew it to Algiers, and it exposed the fragility of Lebanon's power-sharing system.
