In 1915, as the Ottoman Empire staggered under war and famine, a band of Maronite villagers in the cedar highlands of Mount Lebanon rose up against conscription and confiscation. Their leader, Yusuf al-Hakim, a former qabaday from Bsharri, rallied farmers and smugglers to resist the Ottomans' wartime exactions. The uprising was crushed within weeks, its leaders hanged in Beirut's Martyrs' Square, but it planted a seed of armed defiance that would flower in the 1920s and later. This episode follows the revolt from the cedar groves of Arz al-Rab to the hangman's noose, and asks why a small, doomed rebellion mattered so much for Lebanon's national story.
