Dr. Rachel Clarke is an NHS palliative care doctor and an award-winning author who writes regularly for The Guardian, Sunday Times, New Statesman and Lancet, among others. Her books include Your Life in My Hands, which documents life as a junior doctor, and Dear Life, which depicts her work at an NHS hospice and was shortlisted for the 2020 Costa Biography Award and longlisted for the 2020 Bailey Gifford Prize. Her 2021 memoir, Breathtaking, was adapted into an acclaimed TV series. In this conversation, Clarke discusses her latest book, The Story of a Heart, which won the Women’s Prize for Nonfiction 2025
