August 16: ST. STEPHEN OF HUNGARY: A Crown From the Pope

St. Stephen of Hungary knelt among the poor as a king long before Rome ever sent him a crown.

Meet St. Stephen of Hungary, the young Magyar chieftain crowned the first King of Hungary by Pope Sylvester II on Christmas Day, the year 1000. Stephen built churches and monasteries across his kingdom, and alongside his wife Gisela — a true sacramental partnership — helped plant the Catholic faith in a still-pagan land. He even disguised himself as a poor man to hand out alms with his own hands.
