August 23: ST. ROSE OF LIMA: The First Flower of the Americas

St. Rose of Lima wore a crown of roses hiding metal spikes — a secret gift of love to Jesus.

The first saint born in the Americas, Rose of Lima spent hours each day in prayer in a tiny hermitage in her family's garden in Peru. She offered up every small suffering to Jesus, and personally cared for the sick, poor, and enslaved people that colonial Lima pushed aside — washing their wounds and feeding them with her own hands.

"Suffering, she had learned, does not have to be wasted."
