Made Unknowable at Last (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 13 – Part 13)
Om avsnittet
Preparation gives way to irreversible change. To reclaim his home, Odysseus must first erase himself.
In this passage of The Odyssey, Athene reassures Odysseus about Telemachus’s safety and reveals that danger waits instead for the suitors. She then completes her work of disguise, withering his body, dimming his eyes, and clothing him in rags, until the king of Ithaca stands transformed into an unrecognizable beggar.
This moment matters because concealment becomes total—Odysseus steps fully into the role that will carry him through his own house unseen, while Athene departs to gather his son for what is to come.
