The First Lie on Native Ground (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 13 – Part 8)

Home is reached, but truth still waits. Even standing on Ithaca’s soil, Odysseus chooses disguise over revelation.

In this passage of The Odyssey, Odysseus rejoices inwardly at Athene’s confirmation of the land, yet answers her with a carefully crafted false tale. He invents a past of exile, murder, and wandering, testing the stranger before him while guarding his own identity with practiced cunning.

This moment matters because it shows that return does not end deception—on Ithaca itself, Odysseus remains the master of concealment, shaping his survival through story.
