In 1517, Ottoman Sultan Selim I conquered Jerusalem, ending nearly four centuries of Mamluk rule. This episode explores how the Ottomans reshaped the city—from restoring the Dome of the Rock and the Haram al-Sharif to establishing the waqf system that still operates today. We discuss the architectural legacy of Sinan, the administrative reforms that stabilized the city, and how Jerusalem's status as a provincial backwater under the Ottomans ironically preserved its multi-confessional character. Drawing on the chronicles of Evliya Çelebi and Ottoman court records, we uncover a pivotal but often overlooked transition that set the stage for Jerusalem's early modern era.
