Sweden's 1611 Kalmar War: The Last Medieval Conflict

9 min20 juni 2026

Denmark and Sweden had been fighting for centuries, but the Kalmar War of 1611-1613 was different. It was the war that ended an era — the last conflict where medieval chivalric codes still held sway, where kings led charges in person, and where the outcome was decided by a single castle's surrender. We trace the war from its spark over a disputed trade route and a Danish king's demand for the Kalmar Sound toll, through the dramatic Swedish assault on Kalmar Castle, to the death of Sweden's King Charles IX in the midst of the campaign. We also meet the war's most controversial figure — the English mercenary Sir James Spens, who switched sides mid-battle and helped shape Sweden's future army. The Kalmar War set the stage for Sweden's rise as a great power under Gustav II Adolf, but it also cost Denmark its last chance to crush its northern rival. A story of stubborn pride, shifting loyalties, and the end of a fighting tradition.
