Sweden's Viking Silk Road: Silver, Spies and Sigtuna

While most histories of Sweden focus on its later empire or modern welfare state, this episode uncovers the foundational era of the Viking Age through a different lens: the massive influx of Islamic silver that transformed the Swedish economy. We trace the journey of dirhams from the Abbasid Caliphate along the Volga trade route to the mints of Birka and Sigtuna, exploring how this bullion fueled the rise of powerful regional chieftains in Uppland and Södermanland. Lucas and Luna examine the archaeological evidence of hoards found in Uppland, the runestones that commemorate these wealthy traders, and the complex web of diplomatic and commercial ties with Byzantium and Baghdad. The conversation delves into specific figures like the merchant-princes who navigated between the Baltic and the Middle East, and how this wealth laid the groundwork for Sweden’s early state formation long before the Stormaktstiden. By looking at the coins, the runes, and the routes, we reveal how a northern European kingdom became deeply entangled in the global economy of the tenth century.
