Sweden's Hidden WWII Secret: The Spies Who Stopped the Bomb

While history remembers Sweden’s official neutrality during World War II, a shadow war was being waged behind closed doors. This episode uncovers the story of Operation Willgrut and the clandestine network that kept Sweden from falling under Nazi control or becoming a Soviet satellite. We explore how Swedish intelligence, led by figures like Carl Hamilton and supported by the mysterious 'Swedish Mission' in Berlin, gathered critical data on German atomic research. Through conversations with defectors and decoded intercepts, we reveal how small acts of espionage—smuggling documents, feeding misinformation, and maintaining backchannel communications—helped preserve Sweden’s sovereignty. Discover the tension between public neutrality and private resistance, the role of the Abwehr, and the moral dilemmas faced by those who worked in the shadows to protect their nation from the looming threat of nuclear warfare.
