Sweden's 1710 Battle of Helsingborg: The Last Danish Invasion

9 min28 juni 2026

In 1710, with Sweden reeling from Poltava and the Great Northern War turning against her, Denmark saw its chance. A Danish army landed in Skåne, the old Danish province lost in 1658, hoping to reclaim it. But Sweden's Magnus Stenbock, a Carolean general with a talent for the dramatic, mounted a desperate winter campaign. The Battle of Helsingborg on March 10, 1710, became the last time Danish troops set foot on Swedish soil. We look at the battle itself — the charge at the Råån stream, the Swedish left flank's collapse, Stenbock's rally — and its aftermath: a peace that cemented Skåne's place in Sweden, and a quiet end to centuries of Danish-Swedish war on home ground. Along the way, we touch on the plague that stalked both armies, the peasant levies who fought with stolen boots, and the strange legacy of a battle that decided nothing but ended everything.
