Sweden's 1710 Battle of Helsingborg: The Last Danish Invasion

5 min15 juni 2026

In 1710, as the Great Northern War ravaged the Baltic, Denmark saw its chance to reclaim the lost provinces of Skåne, Halland, and Blekinge. A Danish army of 14,000 men landed near Helsingborg, hoping to spark a local uprising against Swedish rule. But Magnus Stenbock, the Swedish general, marched south with a hastily assembled force of Caroleans — battle-hardened veterans and raw recruits alike. The two armies clashed on the foggy fields of Ringstorp on February 28, 1710. What followed was a brutal, close-quarters battle where Swedish discipline and bayonet charges shattered the Danish invasion. Stenbock's victory not only saved Skåne for Sweden but also cemented his reputation as one of the last great commanders of the Swedish Empire. Yet the battle also exposed the strain of decades of war: Sweden's resources were stretched thin, and the Danes, though defeated, would try again. This episode explores the campaign, the tactics, and the human cost of a battle that decided the fate of southern Sweden.
