Sweden's Lost Gold Rush: The Kongsberg Silver Mystery

While we’ve explored Sweden’s Viking silver trade and its Caribbean colonies, this episode uncovers a lesser-known chapter of the Swedish Empire’s global reach: the mysterious influx of Norwegian gold that helped fund Gustavus Adolphus’s military revolution. We dive into the Kongsberg silver mines in Norway, which were under Swedish control during the Kalmar Union and later conflicts, and trace how this wealth flowed north to Stockholm. Lucas and Luna examine the role of Johan Skytte, the governor who managed these resources, and the economic policies that turned Norwegian mineral wealth into Swedish imperial power. You’ll learn about the specific mining techniques used in the 16th century, the political tension between Copenhagen and Stockholm over resource extraction, and how this hidden financial engine contributed to Sweden’s rise as a European superpower. This story connects the dots between local geology, royal ambition, and the broader narrative of Northern Europe’s economic transformation, offering a fresh perspective on what really funded the Stormaktstiden beyond just timber and iron.
