Odyssey: A Daily Odyssey through Homer’s The Odyssey

A Mother’s Lament (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 4 – Part 22)

8 min24 mars 2026

Grief deepens when fear finds its voice. What Penelope learns cannot be undone by anger alone.

In The Odyssey, Book 4, Medon admits he does not know whether a god or Telemachus’ own spirit compelled the journey. The uncertainty overwhelms Penelope, who collapses in sorrow at the threshold of her chamber as her handmaids mourn with her.

She pours out her grief, recalling the loss of Odysseus and fearing that her son, too, may be taken without trace. In desperation, she calls for Dolius to summon Laertes, hoping that counsel, protest, or public appeal might yet save the last heir of Odysseus’ house.
