A Plea for Truth, a Promise of Justice (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 4 – Part 10)

A son finally speaks his need aloud. What he asks for is not comfort, but truth.

In The Odyssey, Book 4, Telemachus lays bare the crisis at home: his wealth consumed, his house overrun by the suitors who court his mother and threaten his inheritance. Kneeling before Menelaus, he asks not for mercy, but for plain speech—whether his father lives or died, and how the tale was known.

Menelaus answers with fierce indignation, condemning the suitors and invoking a vision of Odysseus restored to strength and vengeance. He then makes a solemn vow: nothing he learned from the ancient god of the sea will be hidden, and the truth Telemachus seeks will be told in full.
