A Proper Farewell, a Generous Promise (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 4 – Part 17)

The tale comes to rest not in wonder, but in order. What was delayed is set right through ritual, remembrance, and return.

In The Odyssey, Book 4, Menelaus concludes his account by describing his obedience to the gods’ command: the voyage back to Aegyptus, the offering of hecatombs, and the raising of a lasting memorial for Agamemnon. With the gods appeased, a fair wind carries him safely home at last.

Now finished with his story, Menelaus turns to hospitality. He urges Telemachus to remain in Sparta a while longer, promising honor, gifts, and safe passage onward—tokens of friendship meant to endure long after the journey resumes.
