Back from Death, Bound for Greater Peril (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 12 – Part 1)

Om avsnittet

They return from the dead, but rest is brief. The road ahead promises dangers no less terrible than Hades itself.

In The Odyssey, Book 12 opens as Odysseus and his crew sail back from Oceanus to the isle of Aeaea, the land of Dawn. After long exhaustion, they sleep until morning, then return to Circe’s halls to retrieve and properly bury Elpenor, honoring him with fire, tears, and the oar that marked his life. Their descent into the underworld has not gone unseen: Circe herself arrives with food and wine, calling them men who have “known death twice.” She urges them to rest and feast one final day, promising that at dawn she will reveal the path ahead and warn them of every peril yet to come.

This passage marks the calm before catastrophe — a moment of ritual, care, and hard-won knowledge before the most dangerous leg of the voyage begins.
