Between Scylla and Charybdis (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 12 – Part 3)
Om avsnittet
Some dangers cannot be avoided — only chosen between. Survival demands loss.
In The Odyssey, Book 12, Circe reveals the grim choice that awaits Odysseus after the Sirens. One path leads past Scylla, a six-headed horror who snatches sailors from the deck; the other skirts Charybdis, whose vast maw swallows the sea itself. Circe’s counsel is stark: steer close to Scylla’s rock and accept the loss of six men, for to linger near Charybdis is to lose all. Here, foresight does not promise safety — only the lesser of two deaths.
This moment defines the voyage ahead, where command means choosing who will not return.
