Circe Forbids the Fight (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 12 – Part 4)

Om avsnittet

Courage has its limits. Some evils cannot be challenged — only endured or avoided.

In The Odyssey, Book 12, Odysseus asks whether there is any way to escape Charybdis and strike back at Scylla. Circe answers without mercy: Scylla is no mortal foe, but an immortal plague, and resistance will only multiply loss. Flight alone offers survival. She urges him to rush past with all speed and call upon Scylla’s mother to restrain her. Circe then issues her gravest warning yet — of Thrinacia, where the sacred cattle of Helios graze. To harm them is to invite total ruin: the ship destroyed, the crew lost, and Odysseus himself returned home alone and broken, if he returns at all.

This passage draws the line between heroism and wisdom, making clear that survival now depends on restraint, obedience, and the refusal to fight every threat.
