Circe Warns of the Sirens (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 12 – Part 2)

Knowledge is offered at a price. What lies ahead will tempt, destroy, and test the limits of command.

In The Odyssey, Book 12, Circe draws Odysseus aside after the feast and reveals the first perils of the homeward voyage. She warns him of the Sirens, whose song enchants all who hear it, leaving only bones and wasting flesh behind. Her counsel is precise: seal his men’s ears with wax, bind Odysseus to the mast so he alone may listen, and tighten the bonds if he begs for release. She then speaks of the paths beyond — of the Wandering Rocks, where even the gods’ doves are destroyed, and where only the ship Argo ever passed, spared by Hera’s favor.

This moment arms Odysseus with foresight, but not certainty — a reminder that survival will depend on obedience, restraint, and hard choice.
