In The Odyssey, Book 5, a towering wave hurls Odysseus against the jagged shore, where only Athene’s sudden counsel saves him. He clutches the rock with torn hands, endures the recoil of the surf, and is cast back once more into the sea, barely escaping a death not yet ordained.

Bruised and bleeding, Odysseus swims beyond the breakers in search of safer ground. At last he sights the mouth of a smooth-flowing river, sheltered from wind and stone, and there he turns from struggle to supplication—praying to the river as a king, invoking the ancient law of mercy owed to all wanderers who come in need.
