A long-delayed homecoming begins with a confession. Stranded between hunger and the sea, Menelaus recalls how the gods themselves barred his way.
In The Odyssey, Book 4, Menelaus tells Telemachus of his enforced stay near the river Aegyptus, detained for neglecting the gods’ due sacrifices. Marooned on the island of Pharos with his starving men, salvation comes through Eidothee, daughter of the ancient sea-god Proteus, who takes pity on his wandering.
She offers hard-won guidance: only by ambushing Proteus—the old man of the sea who knows all paths and fates—can Menelaus learn how to return home, and what has befallen his household during his long absence.
