In The Odyssey, Book 4, Penelope learns of the suitors’ hidden design when Medon overhears their plotting and brings word to her in the halls. Her anger flares first—an indictment of their ingratitude and abuse of Odysseus’ house—but it quickly turns to terror.

Medon reveals the truth: the suitors plan to murder Telemachus on his return from Pylos and Lacedaemon. At this, Penelope is undone, struck silent by fear that her son’s journey may erase even his name from the earth.
