In The Odyssey, Book 4, Noëmon explains that he willingly gave Telemachus his ship, naming the finest youths of Ithaca as companions—and noting, with wonder, that Mentor appeared in two places at once. The revelation ignites the suitors’ fury.

Antinous calls the company together and lays bare his fear: Telemachus is growing beyond their control. He urges immediate action, proposing an ambush at sea between Ithaca and Samos, where the young prince’s search for his father might be ended in blood before he reaches manhood.
