The sea carries them farther than any chart allows. Daylight fades, and the world itself seems to end.
In The Odyssey, Book 11 begins as Odysseus and his crew set sail once more, guided by a favoring wind sent by Circe herself. They travel steadily until the sun sinks and darkness overtakes the voyage, bearing them to the farthest limits of the world. There lies the land of the Cimmerians, shrouded in perpetual mist, where sunlight never reaches and night reigns without end.
This passage marks the true threshold of the journey — the crossing from the realm of the living toward the shadows beyond.
