Odyssey: A Daily Odyssey through Homer’s The Odyssey

Seven Years on Ogygia (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book VII – Part 8)

17 min30 april 2026

At last, the stranger speaks of what has been held back. His answer opens onto years of loss, endurance, and longing far from any human shore.

In this passage from The Odyssey, Book VII, Odysseus responds to Queen Arete by recounting his time on Ogygia with Calypso. He tells of the destruction of his ship by Zeus, the loss of his companions, his survival upon the wreckage, and the seven years he spent weeping in captivity despite Calypso’s promise of immortality. Only after a command from Zeus does she send him away upon a raft, setting him once more upon the open sea.

This is the beginning of Odysseus’ full account of suffering, where survival itself becomes the prelude to hope.
